E&P is happy to be the witness of the historical event that is Shchukin’s collection being exhibited at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris.
As a great modern art lover and patron, Shchukin gathered during the first half of the 19th century an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, collages, and drawings by the best impressionists, post-impressionists and modernist masters. We remember him in France as a great benefactor of French modern art, supporting it through its development. His residence in Moscow was open to the public every Sunday as early as 1908, making it the very first museum of modern art. But Shchukin fled to France during the Revolution, and many of his works were nationalised. The rest was dispersed after his death in 1948.
Hence the buzzing in the world of art connoisseurs – this is the first time in nearly 100 years that this collection is presented as a whole, and travels outside of Russia.
And what a collection! 29 Picassos, 22 Matisse (of which 2 were commissioned by Shchukin himself, Dance and Music), 8 Monets, 8 Cezannes, 12 Gauguin, and 4 Van Gogh, to name only the most famous. In total, 127 works are being brought together by Louis Vuitton Foundation, with the note-worthy involvement of Bernard Arnaud, for all to see from October to February.
